Wine Making
Winemaking is also known as vinification. It is the method of making wine from the collection of grapes to the bottling of refined wine. Wine can be prepared from fruits, grapes and berries. Mostly wine is made up from grapes. There can be many types of wine which is prepared such as pink wines, red wines and white wines.
How Wine is made?
One can follow the following steps while making wine such as:-
Growing Grapes
First of all, the different varieties of grapes are grown and European Vitis vinifera is considered as the best grape for wines. This variety of grape contains the accurate balance of acid and sugar in order to produce a good fermented wine without adding anything.
Harvest
The main factor while determining for the harvest is weather on which each crop depends. During the period of harvest, the temporary effects of weather play an important role.
To generate great wine, the fruit should contain a high content of sugar. The people growing wine grape must decide about the correct time period for harvesting. If one knows that it will not rain, then one can check the brix and then harvest grape wine. If harvest is done early, then the alcohol content will be very low.
Initial Processing of the Grape Juice
First of all, grapes are compressed by tramping with the feet or by using a machine. The seeds and covering are instantly eliminated from the juice. Division will not instantly take place because stems and skin are an essential resource of tannins which influence the maturity and taste of wine throughout the period.
Maceration will take place for few hours and then the grapes are pressed. Grapes are pressed by using a huge cylindrical container and a bladder press. Then the grapes are compressed and the juice and rest of the grapes are separated and this is done with the help of a centrifuge.
Fermentation
Fermentation is the process by which grape juice is converted into alcohol. Grapes on the plant are enclosed with mold, yeast and bacteria. Then put a grape juice into an urn at the appropriate temperature, one can notice that yeast will convert the sugar first into the juice and then it will convert into carbon dioxide and alcohol.
Fermentation is mainly done in the vessels made up of stainless steel. Yeast also adds taste to the wine. The wine yeast which is commonly found is Saccharomyces.
Malo-Lactic Fermentation
The person making wine can enable a white wine to experience a second fermentation which arises because of malic acid present in the grape juice. During this process, malic acid is broken down into lactic acid and carbon dioxide which provides extra taste to the wine. This process is mainly used in case of sparkling wines.
First Racking
After the process of fermentation is completed, the wine is allowed to stand motionless till the fine floating material and the yeast cells settle down. Then the wine is cleaned without unsettling the yeast or the sediment.
Winery Aging
At the time of winery aging, the winemaker mix wine from unlike barrels to obtain a consistent outcome.
Stabilization and Filtration
This process is performed to eliminate the traces of tartaric acid. This process includes unsettling of wine which will take shape of tartarates and then these crystals are eliminated through filtration.
Pasteurization
If the wine contains less than 14 percent of alcohol content, then heat or cold pasteurization is done with the help of microporous strainers before the process of bottling.
Bottling Wine
Different shapes of bottles are used by the makers of wine to signify various types of wine. The colored bottles assist the people in decreasing the harm by light. The size of the bottles can also differ.
