Types of Red Wine

The red wine is manufactured from the dark colored mainly black variety of grapes. The black grapes contain juice which is greenish-white in color and the wine is in red color due to anthocyan colors which are present in the skins of the grapes.

There are about 40 different varieties of red grapes which are grown throughout the world. The redness of a wine is based on the contact with the covering of the grapes and not on the color of the grape. Some of the very popular types of grapes which are used in the manufacture of red wines and they are:-

Merlot

It is the most extensively planted red grape variety which is grown in Bordeaux region of France . It is very easy to drink. Its smoothness has made it an ‘initiating wine’ for original drinkers of red wine. Earlier, it was grown in France but now this variety is grown in the West Coast of US. The taste of this wine is very rough as compared to Cabernet Sauvignon. This type of wine is available in herbal and black cherry flavors.

Pinot Noir

It is one of the oldest grape varieties for red wine. It is very complex to grow and infrequently combined containing no coarseness. This red wine is served with chicken, grilled salmon and lamb. This type of grape variety is grown in California , New Zealand , France , Oregon and upper Loire valley. It is available in strawberry, cherry and plum flavors with soft tannins.

Sangiovese

This variety of grape is grown in the Tuscany region of Italy and California . It is served with Mediterranean and Italian style cuisines. It comes in plum and fresh berry flavors. This variety of grape is used for dark red wines.

Barbera

This variety of grape has same features as the Merlot variety. This type of red wine is flexible and is served with various dishes such as tomato sauces. It is another common red wine which is grown in regions of Italy and prevalent in California . It comes in plum and black cherry taste and contains excellent acidity and a silky texture.

Zinfandel

This is considered as the most flexible grape wine in the world. This red wine is based on the heaviness or freshness of the wine and is served with pizza, tomato-sauce pastas and barbecued and grilled meats. It is grown only in California . It has a zesty flavor along with berry taste.

Cabernet Sauvignon

It is one of the best varieties of grape in the world for producing red wines. It is combined with merlot and cabernet franc. It is served with red meat. It is grown in regions of California , Australia , France and Chile.
