German Wine
German wine is also manufactured in most parts of the Germany and along with this country; there are many other countries in northern Europe which produce wines of excellent quality.
It is also well recognized for sweet, cheap and low quality manufactured wines like Liebfraumilch. Germany mostly produces white wine from the best quality such as Riesling. Most of the wines produced in Germany contain sweet taste and is light, low in alcohol and unoaked.
Traditionally, most of the wines are dry and mainly sold in restaurants as procedures to stop fermentation did not survive. Most of the German white wine is prepared using the dry style. Sweet wines are exported from Germany to Great Britain.
Red wine is very difficult to manufacture in the climate of Germany and it was generally light in color in the past. Richer red wines are generally manufactured from grapes like Spatburgunder and Dornfelder.
As there is northerly climate in Germany , the wine makers look for appropriate varieties of grapes. The grape variety like Muller-Thurgau has lower quality as compared to the grapes which are used traditionally. Now, plantings for Riesling are grown largely and the demand is increasing for high quality wines internationally.
All the varieties of wine in Germany are created around rivers like Rhine and its streams which are generally protected by mountains. These places are very vertical and contain the maximum sunlight; therefore, it is very hard to harvest automatically.
The most typical feature of German wines is the high intensity of acidity in them which is produced by the variety of grapes like Riesling and by the lesser maturity in a northerly climate. Most of the German wines are manufactured using organic and biodynamic farming processes.
